Tri-County Chick-to-Chick Program

Does your child enjoy working with animals? If so, the Tri-County Chick to Chicken Program is an excellent opportunity for youth to learn more about raising and showing chickens through a hands-on experience!

In this six-month program, youth receive two chicks to raise until the final event of showing them at the Avery A&H Fair and WNC Mountain State Fair. During the program, youth will attend one workshop per month where they will bring their chickens, learn how to care for, and show them.

There will be an interest meeting on March 7th at 5:30 p.m. at  Trinity Episcopal Church in Spruce Pine (15 Hemlock Ave, Spruce Pine, NC 28777). Registration fee is $50 and is due at the Tuesday, April 4th workshop.

The 2023 workshops will be held at Riverside Park, 305 Tappan Street, Spruce Pine, NC 28777, at 5:30 p.m. on the following dates: April 4th,(mandatory workshop),  April 18th, (mandatory chick adoption), May 2nd, June 6th, and August 1st.

Youth will be placed into age categories where they will show/compete against each other. The age categories are as follows: Group 1 (Ages 5-8), Group 2 (Ages 9-12), Group 3 (Ages 13-15), and Group 4 (Ages 14-18).  Youth ages 5-8 will show their chickens and be asked questions, but will not be judged.  At the conclusion of the program, a final celebration will be held, and participants can choose to auction off their chickens or keep them.
