WNC Ag Options announces 2010 funding cycle:
Mountain farmers eligible for funds to diversify operations.

Grants totaling $225,000 are available to Western North Carolina farmers who are diversifying or expanding their operations in 2010. WNC Agricultural Options will award approximately 45 farmers in 17 counties and the Cherokee Reservation $3,000, $6,000 or $9,000 each.

Interested applicants should see the agricultural agents at their local Extension Centers by November 23, 2009 and can visit www.wncagoptions.org to download an application. Projects should increase the sale of farm products and lead to the long-term sustainability of the farm business.

The postmark deadline for applications is January 8, 2010

Soil Testing Information

In North Carolina, most soils are acidic and low in nutrients. Good plant growth usually requires the addition of lime and fertilizer. Soil testing is the best way to find out how much to apply. The North Carolina Department of Agriculture offers soil testing and information for both commercial growers and home owners. Soil samples are usually analyzed within about a week, but may take longer from late fall through early spring due to heavy loads from farmers at this time. Results of the tests are posted on an online system and also mailed to the client. MORE

	Aquaculture Tour December 3rd, 2009 @ 9:30 AM - 4:00 PM
	Tour Grandfather Trout Farm, Banner Elk and Hump Mountain Trout Farm on Thursday, December 3. Grandfather Trout Farm is a fee fishing operation located near Boone. Hump Mountain Trout Farm is a fingerling and food fish producer located in Elk Park. Both of these facilities have been in operation for years. "Creating Happy and Healthy Children" Course

The Avery County Cooperative Extension Center will be hosting a 10 week course for parents and chilcare providers ( child care providers can earn 20 CEU credits from DCD). The course will begin on September 15th through November 17th, 2009; class will be held each Tuesday.
