Avery & Mitchell Counties Forestry Field Tour

(Updated: April 23, 2024, 4:22 a.m.)
A wooded mountainside.

Mountain forest management in North Carolina is much like the landscape of the Appalachian Mountains. It's never quite what you expected but you're so glad to be a part of it. Appalachian hardwood lumber is some of the most prized lumber in the world. Growing it from seedling to a quality sawlog, though, requires careful management. Join NC State Extension Forestry as we examine forest management being conducted in Avery and Mitchell Counties and see what practices can be employed on your property to generate a beautiful and profitable stand. A myriad of natural resource professionals from the Natural Resource Conservation Service, Ruffed Grouse Society, and the landowner, Jim Phillips, will provide a walking panel discussion on managing quality hardwood sawtimber in the Appalachian Mountains.

4 Hours of continuing forestry education credits will be offered for registered foresters.
