Environment North Carolina's quality of life and its economy depend on a strong natural resource base. To help the public understand complex issues related to environmental quality and to meet changing environmental regulations, North Carolina Cooperative Extension offers a range of educational programs covering water quality, waste management, wildlife management, collaborative problem-solving and more. Christmas tree farming in Avery County is becoming “sustainable”. Sustainable agriculture means the farming practices are friendly to the soil, water, wildlife, and surrounding people. The land will remain productive for generations to come and the business of Christmas tree farming remains economically profitable. These two goals, economic and environmental, more and more are becoming compatible even complimentary. The natural beauty of the native flora and fauna together with Fraser fir, a special native conifer as the primary agricultural crop, makes an ideal package. We have had a resurgence of turkey, deer, and bear over the last 10 years. The success of Choose and Cut Christmas Tree sales the last ten years, is clear evidence of the collaboration, not competition, of Agriculture and Tourism in Avery County.
